A three-year starter as a defensive back defensive back at TCU, McGinnis graduated into the coaching world with his alma matera. He also coached at Missouri, Indiana State and Kansas State.
McGinnis moved to the NFL in 1986 where he joined the defending Super Bowl champion Chicago Bears. He coached linebackers from 1986 to 1995. In 1996, McGinnis got the chance as a defensive coordinator with the Arizona Cardinals. In 2000, be because the franchise’s head coach where he spent four seasons.
In 2004, McGinnis came to Jeff Fisher’s coaching staff with the Tennessee Titans in 2004 where he coached linebackers. He would be named assistant head coach, a role he continued when Fisher became head coach of the Rams.
